The manager appeared to be confronted by a
supporter towards the end of his side’s 2-0
defeat by Southampton, with the person
subsequently detained for the provocation
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insisted he was
unfazed by an incident which saw one of the
club’s fans arrested for confronting him during
their 2-0 defeat to Southampton.
With roughly 10 minutes left to play at St Mary’s,
a 25-year-old man was stopped by security after
walking to the dugout, and was later detained by
Hampshire Police.
The supporter was understood to have gestured
insultingly at the Gunners boss and his assistant,
Steve Bould, as well as reportedly aiming verbal
insults.
Wenger, however, claimed that the fan was not
behaving violently and doubted that it was one of
his own travelling supporters registering their
displeasure – doubts which were subsequently
rejected by the home team.
“There was a young boy, yes,” he told reporters
after the game. “I think he was a Southampton
fan. He was not aggressive at all. I don’t think he
said anything.”
Southampton boss Ronald Koeman claimed not to
have seen the incident.
With Arsenal struggling in the battle for
Champions League qualification this season, a
situation not helped by the Saints’ victory on
Thursday, and their title challenge already all but
over, Wenger has already been the subject of
abuse from the Gunners faithful.
In December, he was greeted with foul-mouthed
shouting when boarding a train from Stoke after
his side suffered a 3-2 defeat at the Britannia
Stadium.
